Healing Foods

With fast food available at the click of a button and free time dwindling it's easy to overlook how critical our diet is to our physical, mental and emotional health.

The adverse effects of consuming food that we are allergic to is an indication of how much what we eat affects our bodies, therefore we should pay equal attention to food that heals as we do food that harms.

Watch this video from chef Lauren Kretzer talking through foods that helped her beat cancer, and some tips on the best ways to prepare it:

Her top foods to reduce the risk of initially developing cancer and the prevention of it from progressing are:

  1. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, radishes, kale, watercress, cauliflower etc.
  2. Garlic which strengthens the immune system.
  3. Berries, particularly blackberries and the Indian gooseberry amla which are high in antioxidants which neutralise the harmful effects of cancer.
  4. Mushrooms, following a study which found that consuming just 18 grams of mushrooms per day was associated with a 45% lower risk of cancer compared to having no mushrooms at all due to their antioxidant properties. Their antiestrogen properties also mean they particularly suppress breast cancer - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8483951/
  5. Turmeric which contains curcumin that slows cancer growth.
  6. Unprocessed soy products such as organic tofu, tempeh, unsweetened soy milk and edamame which are linked to prevention of breast cancer as well as reducing the chance of it reoccurring.

Dr. William Li speaks here about the inner workings of the body's defence systems and how foods can support it to help beat disease:

Particularly powerful foods are:

  1. Seafood for its healthy omega 3 fatty acids.
  2. Dairy products such as cheese and yogurts containing probiotic healthy gut bacteria.
  3. Fruits including pomegranates and strawberries.

Studies also show red meats and processed meats (sausages, pepperoni etc) are classed as carcinogens which have the potential to cause cancer. His book Eat to Beat Disease contains simple meal plans you can follow to keep yourself as healthy as possible and is definitely worth a read.
